Downtown

The downtown area is booming with local eateries and historical sites that tell the fascinating story of Kansas City, Kansas  With no majority of ethnicity, KCK is a true melting pot of culture, making for an eclectic downtown where you can find something interesting to do any time of the day.

Beginning around 1889, the downtown area has been the commercial hub of Kansas City, Kansas and remains the heart of the city to this day. Downtown is home to many significant businesses and government organizations, and the neighborhoods are teeming with local eateries, nightlife and historical sites.  Visitors and business travelers have plenty of options when it comes to entertainment, dining and sight-seeing.

The culture, diversity and history of this area might be the most fascinating in all of the city. Take a stroll down Minnesota Avenue, also known as the “Avenue of Murals,” where you’ll find colorful artwork representing a different heritage or historical event that has shaped the area.

In the heart of downtown is the Wyandot National Burying Ground, where the infamous Conley sisters are buried along with their ancestors. The grounds have been a gathering spot and a sacred place for members of the Wyandot Nation for many years.

The renowned Strawberry Hill neighborhood, where you could once find wild strawberry fields, was founded in the 1800s and still preserves a strong Croatian heritage. Stop by the Strawberry Hill Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the different immigrants who have settled here and made KCK their home.

Central Avenue is booming with ethnic and local eateries. The afternoon rush brings crowds to this area for delicious, authentic street tacos. Some of the best Hispanic taquerias in the metro, such as El Torito have been recognized as serving some of the most delicious eats in all of Kansas City. If barbecue is what you crave, look no further: Slap’s BBQ is a must-eat spot for all carnivores. There, you’ll find some of the city’s best, award-winning burnt ends and ribs.
