The 6th Annual Slovenefest is dedicated to Don Lipovac in memory of his outstanding contribution to classical and folkloric Slovenian accordion music to the local community and his many years of entertainment, both locally and worldwide.

When Lipovac was 7, he played his button box accordion at family events.  When he was 16, he won a competition at Municipal Auditorium to appear on "Ted Mack's Amateur Hour", a kind of "American Idol" of the early 1950's.  He performed on the Lawrence Welk Show and countless weddings and church and ethnic festivals.  Brian McCarty, who played with Don, will provide the musical entertainment and the Hrvatski Obi?aj Tamburaši group will also perform.

Mejak, who was the longest living priest to serve at Holy Family Church from June 1944 until Christmas Eve, December 24, 2007 (64 years).  Bishop Anton Martin Slomsek, who was also a scholar and was responsible for saving the Slovenian Heritage, was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 19, 1999.  Bishop Frederic Baraga was honored by beatification by Pope Benedict XV.  France Prešen was a 19th-century Romantic Slovene poet, best known as the poet who inspired virtually all later Slovene literature and has been generally acknowledged as the greatest Slovene classical author.  The art nouveau style of Slovene architect, Jože Ple?nik, designed the iconic "3 Bridges" and many notable buildings and contributed to many civic improvements in the city market place, and along the banks of the Ljubljanica River and through Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia.  Locally, Dr. Paul L. O'Boynick, II, M.D., is a neurosurgeon with Neurosurgery Associates of Kansas.  Dr. Michael Bartkoski spent his career in the animal health sciences field, primarily in vaccine manufacturing.  Robert Serra is a Kansas District judge. Joseph Lastelic is a retired Washington correspondent for The Kansas City Star.  He also played the organ here at the church many years ago.  Alfred Matthew Yankovic, better known by his stage name, "Weird Al", Yankovic's father, Nick Louis Yankovic, was of Slovenian descent, was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and was baptized at Holy Family Church, many other outstanding Slovenian parishioners.

The Slovenian celebration will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 27, 2014, with a Holy Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church, located at 274 Orchard Street, Kansas City, KS.  Festivities will follow the Holy Mass and includes children and adult games, a cultural booth, souvenirs, and a silent auction, and an authentic Slovenian dinner, serving your choice of Sarma (stuffed cabbage roll), Poljene Paprika (stuffed pepper), Krvavica (a specialty sausage), Slovenian potato salad and green beans. Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri kick off "Soccer Week"; challenge region to Border Wars: Competition for the Greater Good

Kansas City, Kan. - July 24, 2013  - Mayor Mark Holland, Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., and Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo, on behalf of Mayor Sly James, Kansas City, Mo. kicked off "Soccer Week in Kansas City" at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. today, Wednesday, July 24, 2013 in anticipation of the AT&T MLS All-Star soccer game to be held July 31.

Also in attendance at the event were: Steve Hahn, President of AT&T Kansas; Valerie Nicholson-Watson, CEO of Harvesters; Coach Peter Vermes, Sporting KC.

Mayor Holland welcomed the soccer community to Kansas City and he and Mayor Pro Tem Circo presented a joint Proclamation to Sporting KC and All-Star coach Peter Vermes, declaring July 24-31, 2013 to be "Soccer Week in Kansas City."  A 30-foot inflatable soccer jersey was unveiled.  The jersey will travel to various locations in the region. Official AT&T MLS All-Star soccer jerseys were presented by Coach Vermes for both mayors.

To enhance the week's events, Mayor Holland challenged Mayor Sly James and the Kansas City, Mo. constituency to a "Return of the Border Wars:  Competition for the Greater Good."  Each mayor will be encouraging their constituents to contribute canned goods to Harvester's food collection bins designated Kansas or Missouri.  The collection bins will travel with the 30-foot inflatable jersey throughout the week (schedule attached).  Mayor Holland and Mayor Pro Tem Circo jump-started the challenge by contributing their own bags of canned goods to the food bins with Harvesters CEO, Valerie Nicholson-Watson witnessing.

Mayor Holland said, "There is a lot of hype about competition between Kansas and Missouri sports teams, KU and MU, and economic development battles.  We know that we can do great things if we work across state lines for the entire region.  The food drive border war to benefit Harvesters is a symbol of the great things that can be accomplished if we put a spin on the competition and work together."

Mayor Pro Tem Circo, who attended on behalf of Mayor James who made a last-minute trip to Warrensburg, Mo.  for President Obama's appearance, praised the partnership between the two Kansas Cities established by Mayor James and former Unified Government Mayor, Joe Reardon and praised the region's commitment to youth soccer.  "Both Kansas Citys are recognized across the country for our commitment to youth soccer.  One of the things that has brought our cities together is our investment in  youth soccer."

Additionally, Mayor Holland invited families to attend free events including  "Family Fun Day" to be held Village West to include a MLS fan celebration on July 31 from 4:00 -8:00 p.m. and community watch parties to be held at Kansas City, Kansas  Community College from 8:00 - 10:00 p.m. and at Dave & Busters from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m.

Given to the top vote recipient in selected categories, the 2012 MLS Postseason Awards were voted on by media members, as well as all 19 clubs and their players.

The following Sporting Kansas City representatives are among the final three candidates in their respective award category:

Defender of the Year Finalists (announced Nov. 20)

Victor Bernardez (San Jose Earthquakes)

MLS W.O.R.K.S. Humanitarian of the Year Finalists (announced Nov. 20)

Kei Kamara (Sporting Kansas City)

Michael Lahoud (Philadelphia Union)

Chris Seitz (FC Dallas)

Coach of the Year Finalists (announced Nov. 27)

Peter Vermes (Sporting Kansas City)

Ben Olsen (D.C. United)

Dan Kennedy (Chivas USA)

Volkswagen Most Valuable Player Finalists (announced Nov. 29)

Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls)

Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

Besler and Collin, a 2012 MLS All-Star, led a Sporting Kansas City defense that allowed 27 goals in 34 MLS matches, the fewest goals conceded by an MLS team this season. The two central defenders anchored a backline that limited opponents to the fewest shots (328) and shots on goal (102) of all 19 teams this season. Besler (No. 25 overall) and Collin (No. 31 overall) are the two highest-ranked defenders in the MLS Castrol Index and Sporting KC went 14-4-6 during the regular season with Besler and Collin in the starting lineup, including a 7-2-4 record against teams in the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Kamara, a 2012 MLS All-Star, established the HeartShapedHands Foundation in 2012 and his support of Schools for Salone has provided scholarships for students in his native Sierra Leone, where the Kei Kamara Home and School for War Orphans was built in Freetown. Kamara was a finalist for the Courage in Sports Award and was also the subject of the documentary-length film KEI about his life story and desire to make a difference since immigrating to the United States as a youth. Kamara finished fourth in the 2011 Humanitarian of the Year category for his charitable work at home and abroad.

Vermes, also a finalist for Coach of the Year honors in 2011, led Sporting KC to the best regular season in club history with an 18-7-9 record. The club finished in first place in the Eastern Conference for the second straight season and set new all-time club records for wins in regulation (18), winning percentage (.662) and points (63) in 2012. Vermes built a roster that was the only playoff team with an average age under 25 and one of only two teams in Major League Soccer without a Designated Player.

Nielsen played every minute in net for Sporting KC this season, setting new club records for minutes played (3,060) and games started (34). He started the 2012 MLS All-Star Game and led MLS with 15 shutouts, second most in MLS history, and 18 victories, matching the MLS record in the non-shootout era. His 0.79 goals against average became the best in club history, breaking Tony Meola’s record set in 2000 with a 0.92 goals against average.

Zusi led Major League Soccer during the regular season with a career-high 15 assists, third most in club history, and a team-record five game-winning assists, most in MLS. Including his five regular season goals and game-winning assist in the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs, Zusi scored or assisted on 21 of the team’s 43 goals in MLS competition. Sporting KC was 13-1-3 in MLS competition (including playoffs) in 2012 when Zusi recorded a goal or an assist. Zusi also made six appearances for the U.S. Men's National Team in 2012.

The six finalists for MLS Awards are the most in club history. In 2000, Kansas City had five nominees and four winners (Bob Gansler – Coach of the Year, Peter Vermes – Defender of the Year, Tony Meola – Goalkeeper of the Year and Most Valuable Player plus Nick Garcia – Rookie of the Year finalist). In addition to the 2012 MLS Postseason Awards, Sporting Kansas City players are also nominated for awards through Major League Soccer’s official websites MLSSoccer.com and FutbolMLS.com. Julio Cesar and C.J. Sapong are nominated for AT&T Goal of the Year, while Nielsen is nominated multiple times for Save of the Year. Finally, 2012 MLS All-Star Roger Espinoza and fellow midfielder Julio Cesar are amongst the final 16 contenders for Latino del Año in MLS.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

T-Bones announce 2013 regular-season schedule

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – The Kansas City T-Bones have announced their 100-game schedule for the 2013 season. The T-Bones open the season with a home-and-home series against the rival Wichita Wingnuts on May 16. The first two games are scheduled to be played in Wichita, with the two teams then opening the CommunityAmerica Ballpark season on Saturday, May 18. The T-Bones will continue that eight-game homestand – the longest of the season – with three games against another rival, the Lincoln Saltdogs, during May 20-22, and then three with Gary SouthShore (May 24-26).

“For the first time in our history, our Home Opener will be on a Saturday night, which is exciting for our fans and the metro area,” said T-Bones General Manager Chris Browne. “Playing an in-state rival like Wichita just adds to the atmosphere on and off the field.”

The holiday portion of the schedule will have the T-Bones at home during Memorial Day weekend and on July 4. Kansas City will play host to Gary SouthShore during May 24-26 (the club does not play on Memorial Day), which will include a special 7:05 p.m. start on Sunday night with fireworks to follow. Then, Sioux Falls will be at CommunityAmerica Ballpark July 2-5.

“Playing at CommunityAmerica Ballpark on the fourth of July has become somewhat of a T-Bones tradition for our fans and Kansas City overall,” Browne said. “I’m glad this tradition will continue and we look forward to more award-winning post-game fireworks shows.”

Once again, the T-Bones will play interleague games against teams from the Can-Am League. Unlike last season, however, all of Kansas City’s games against Can-Am teams will be played at CommunityAmerica Ballpark. The two series against opponents to be determined at a later date are scheduled for June 7-9 and August 19-21.

The T-Bones finish out the regular season on the road with a three-game series at Wichita, beginning August 31. Besides opening and closing the season against the Wingnuts, the two teams will play another four-game home-and-home series midway through the season, July 10 and 11 in Wichita and then July 12 and 13 in Kansas City.

“It's pretty exciting that the alpha and the omega of our regular-season competition is with our in-state rival Wichita,” said T-Bones President Adam Ehlert. “I think we're going to have the Wingnuts' number next season."

The T-Bones face the 2012 American Association champion Winnipeg Goldeyes for only one series, Aug. 16-18, at Winnipeg.

The month-by-month breakdown of the 50 home games: May (8), June (13), July (15) and August (14). Monday-Saturday games are still 7:05 p.m. starts and Sundays remain 5:05 p.m. contests at CommunityAmerica Ballpark with the following exceptions:

·May 26 – Memorial Day weekend game set for 7:05 p.m.

·June 5 and June 19 – School Day games set for 11:05 a.m.

·July 28 – National Parent’s Day matinee set for 1:05 p.m.

Dates and times are subject to change and are weather permitting. Full season and nightly promotions will be announced this winter. Full and half-season ticket packages are on sale now for as low as $212.50. Single-game tickets will go on sale in March 2013. Parking for T-Bones games will remain free in 2013. For more information or to secure your season tickets for next season, call 913-328-5640. Stay tuned to www.tbonesbaseball.com and the T-Bones’ Facebook page for updates throughout the offseason.

More than 200,000 people will journey to KCK in October for major sporting and tourism events. And an estimated 6.5-million racing and soccer fans will tune-in from around the world as NASCAR racing and World Cup Soccer take center stage at Village West.

October 13-21, Wyandotte County will be host to NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series racing, a FIFA World Cup Soccer match and of course, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival, which draws an estimated 250,000 during its annual run.

On October 16, the United States Soccer team will take on Guatemala in a World Cup qualifying match. 17,000 fans are expected to pack LiveSTRONG Sporting Park for the international event. This match will determine whether the U.S. team advances to the final round of World Cup qualifying, so all eyes will be on Kansas City. An expected 900,000 soccer fans will tune in the match on ESPN2 and Univision. More than 200 members of the international media will be in town.

Just a few days later, an expected 150,000 NASCAR fans, racing crews and vendors will hit town for the Sprint Cup Hollywood Casino 400 race and the Nationwide Series race. Kansas Speedway projects the race weekend will bring a $243-million economic impact to the Kansas City region. Besides the fans in the stands, more than 5.5-million racing fans will watch the races on television.

"This Big Week in October highlights the unprecedented success Kansas City, Kansas is having in the tourism and hospitality industry. The entire KC region benefits when this amount of media exposure is placed on our city. I believe this week is a celebration of our city for the success tourism brings, " said Bridgette Jobe, Executive Director of the Kansas City Kansas Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Other events taking place in Wyandotte County October 13-21 include the annual Parade of Heroes at Village West and the grand opening of the metro's newest Sam's Club store in Plaza at the Speedway. For a complete list of events visit www.visitKansasCityKs.com.

Tourists, sports fans and shoppers make more than 10-million visits a year to KCK and its destination tourism attraction, Village West. Village West is home to Kansas Speedway, LiveSTRONG Sporting Park, Community America Ballpark, Hollywood Casino, The Legends Outlets Kansas City, Nebraska Furniture Mart, Cabela's, Great Wolf Lodge and dozens of restaurants. Schlitterbahn Waterpark is also nearby.

Studies show a visitor to KCK spends at least $167 a day for travel, lodging, food and entertainment. The more than 1,600 hotel rooms in KCK will be full for the week with many more visitors staying in rooms in other KC metro cities.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

T-Bones rank fifth in independent baseball in ‘12 attendance

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – For the fifth straight year, the Kansas City T-Bones were in the top five for average attendance in independent baseball, according to Ballpark Digest’s annual ranking, released on Monday.

Ballpark Digest’s list lumps together 388 teams from the affiliated minor leagues, independent leagues, summer collegiate leagues and the Mexican League.

Kansas City, which was second in average attendance in the American Association behind Winnipeg, finished 47th overall on Ballpark Digest’s 2012 list with an average of 5,212 fans per game. Three teams from the independent Atlantic League – Sugar Land, Long Island and Somerset – finished ahead of the T-Bones.

By comparison to the T-Bones’ overall ranking of 47, the Omaha Storm Chasers were 30th (5,938) and the Northwest Arkansas Naturals were 62nd (4,656). The Springfield Cardinals, St. Louis’ double-A affiliate, were two places behind the T-Bones at 49th with 5,111 fans per game.

The T-Bones have totaled more than 200,000 fans during each of their 10 seasons in Kansas City, and in 2012 eclipsed the 2.5-million mark for total attendance (2,558,238) in the club’s history.

“We’re obviously very proud of our product overall, but the proof that we’re doing something right is how the club has resonated so well with fans,” said T-Bones President Adam Ehlert. “Kansas City is a spectacular baseball town, and rooting the club and CommunityAmerica Ballpark in Wyandotte County 10 years ago could not have been a better fit. Thank you, baseball fans, for our first great 10 years.”

The T-Bones set a Tuesday night attendance record in 2012 when 10,202 people filled CommunityAmerica Ballpark on June 12 against Newark. It was one of the top single-game marks in club history.

“For a team to set an attendance record like that in its 10th season is unheard of,” said T-Bones Vice President and General Manager Chris Browne. “We would like to thank our fans, partners, staff and team for providing an atmosphere of Fun Well Done again in 2012. It was truly a remarkable 10th anniversary season.”

Season tickets are available for the 2013 campaign by calling the T-Bones ticket office at 913-328-5618. More information is available online at tbonesbaseball.com.

After a scoreless first half, Sporting Kansas City forward Kei Kamara scored the game's opening goal in the 84th minute from the penalty spot after a Zach Scott handball inside the penalty area. Seattle responded two minutes later with a header from Scott off a Mauro Rosales free kick. Both 15-minute extra time periods ended scoreless, leaving kicks from the spot to decide the 99th annual edition of the U.S. Open Cup.

(August 7, 2012) - Sporting Kansas City will host the Seattle Sounders FC at 8 p.m. CT on Wednesday at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in the championship match of the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The winner will earn a berth in the 2013-2014 CONCACAF Champions League and will have their name engraved on the Dewar Challenge Trophy, awarded annually since 1914, as the top team in American soccer for 2012.

The oldest annual team tournament in American sports, the U.S. Open Cup celebrates its 99th edition this year and is named after Sporting Kansas City's original founder Lamar Hunt. The field of 64 teams, the largest in tournament history, has been narrowed to two finalists through seven rounds of single-elimination competition.

Wednesday's match will be nationally broadcast live on GolTV (channel listings below) with the commentary team of Lindsey Dean, Gino Fuentes and George Metellus covering all the action. Sports Radio 810 WHB will air the match live locally and online at 810whb.com, with a pre-game show beginning at 7:30 p.m. CT and the Final Whistle: Sporting KC Postgame show immediately following the match.

Live radio broadcasts will also be available on La Gran D 1340 AM (Spanish) in Kansas City and 97.3 KIRO FM in Seattle. MLSSoccer.com will air a special, one-hour pre-game show live from LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, beginning at 7 p.m. CT.

A limited number of tickets are still available for the match, and can be purchased online at Ticketmaster.com or at the LIVESTRONG Sporting Park box offices. Additionally, due to the excessive heat warning in effect for Wyandotte County, ticket holders are permitted to bring one sealed bottle of water (20-ounce or smaller), which will be uncapped upon entry at the stadium gates.

Sporting Kansas City makes their second appearance in the final of the U.S. Open Cup, having lifted the trophy in 2004 with a 1-0 extra time victory over the Chicago Fire at Arrowhead Stadium. The team reached tomorrow's final with four consecutive victories, eliminating Orlando City SC, Colorado Rapids, Dayton Dutch Lions and Philadelphia Union in succession.

Sporting Kansas City, who will be without defender Aurelien Collin on Wednesday due to caution accumulation, is 15-10-3 all-time in the tournament and 10-5-0 when playing at home in U.S. Open Cup competition, including a 4-1-0 record at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. Sporting Kansas City has faced the Seattle Sounders FC three times in tournament history, defeating the then-USL side 4-0 in 2001 and drawing 0-0 in 2008. The last meeting came in 2009 with the Sounders FC prevailing 1-0 in the quarterfinals en route to their first of three straight U.S. Open Cup titles.

Seattle have advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Final for a fourth straight season. After becoming one of just four teams to win three consecutive U.S. Open Cup tournaments in its 98-year history, Seattle can become the first to hoist the trophy for a fourth straight time on Wednesday.

The club holds an undefeated 17-0-1 record in the tournament since joining MLS in 2009. This year, Seattle advanced with wins over Atlanta Silverbacks, Cal FC, San Jose Earthquakes and Chivas USA.

The Sounders FC have only played four U.S. Open Cup matches away from home in the past four years and will be on the road for a final for the first time since a 2-1 win over D.C. United at RFK Stadium in 2009. Sounders FC striker Eddie Johnson makes his first return to Kansas City since playing for the then-Wizards in 2006 and 2007, and leads Seattle with 10 goals in MLS play this year.

In addition to Johnson, the visitors boast a potent offense that includes 2011 Major League Soccer MVP finalist Mauro Rosales along with fellow Designated Players Fredy Montero and Christian Tiffert. Defensively, goalkeeper Michael Gspurning leads MLS with a 0.47 goals against average and 84.0 saves percentage in nine MLS appearances.

Wednesday's match marks the second meeting between the two sides in 2012, with the first concluding in a 1-1 draw at CenturyLink Field in June. That road result snapped a streak of six-straight one-goal losses in all competition for Sporting Kansas City against Seattle, all of which came on game-winning goals after the 75th minute.

Sporting Kansas City supporters can also follow Wednesday's game online via @SKCGameday on Twitter and the MLSSoccer.com MatchCenter or USSoccer.com Game Tracker, or on mobile devices with Sporting Explore.

Sporting KC has three selected to 2012 MLS All-Star First XI

Nielsen, Collin and Zusi among top vote getters on All-Star ballot

(July 8, 2012) - Sporting Kansas City goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, defender Aurelien Collin and midfielder Graham Zusi were announced as members of the 2012 MLS All-Star First XI on Sunday, Major League Soccer revealed.

The First XI are the 11 MLS players who received the most votes from fans at their positions from the 2012 MLS All-Star ballot. Sporting Kansas City's three representatives are the most of all MLS clubs and each of the three players will be in consideration for the 18-man gameday roster to be selected by MLS All-Star coach Ben Olsen (D.C. United) and revealed on Sunday, July 15.

The 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game will be held at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, July 25 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa. where the MLS All-Stars will face European Champions Chelsea FC live on ESPN2 and TeleFutura.

Nielsen earns his second MLS All-Star recognition, winning the AT&T Text Voting with 27% of all text votes. It marks the second straight season that a Sporting KC player has won the AT&T Text Voting, following Matt Besler's honor one year ago.

A fan favorite, Nielsen was the team's 2011 MVP and has played every minute in net for Sporting Kansas City this season. The Sporting KC captain is tied for the League lead with 10 victories this year and his nine shutouts are second most in MLS. Nielsen posted a 414-minute shutout streak earlier this year, the longest in MLS this season, and his 1.11 career goals against average in MLS play is third best in League history among goalkeepers with 4,000 minutes played.

Collin, 26, earns his first MLS All-Star selection in his second season in the League. The French centerback has started all 18 MLS matches for Sporting Kansas City this season, anchoring a defense that has an MLS-best 0.94 goals against average and that has conceded a League low five goals at home this season. He's also contributed three goals and one assist on the offensive end.

Zusi, named MLS Breakout Player of the Year in 2011 with five goals and seven assists, also earns his first MLS All-Star selection. The 25-year-old playmaker is the only player to have appeared in every match for Sporting Kansas City in all competition this season and has a single-season career high with eight assists, second most in MLS, and leads the League with four game-winning assists. Zusi has broken into the U.S. Men's National Team player pool this year, starting two matches and scoring the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Panama, and has also scored two goals for Sporting KC this season.

A total of 32 players will earn the honor of being named a 2012 MLS All-

Star. In addition to those voted to the First XI or selected for Olsen's gameday roster, MLS Commissioner Don Garber will make two selections and MLS player voting will determine the remaining All-Stars.

2012 MLS All-Star First XI

Goalkeeper: Jimmy Nielsen (Sporting Kansas City)

Defenders: Steven Beitashour (San Jose Earthquakes), Aurélien Collin (Sporting Kansas City), Jay DeMerit (Vancouver Whitecaps FC), Heath Pearce (New York Red Bulls)

Midfielders: David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Dwayne De Rosario (D.C. United), Landon Donovan (LA Galaxy), Graham Zusi (Sporting Kansas City)

Forwards: Thierry Henry (New York Red Bulls), Chris Wondolowski (San Jose Earthquakes)

(May 11, 2012) - Sporting Kansas City announced on Friday that the club will host Stoke City FC of the Barclays Premier League at 7:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Aug. 1 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park.

"We look forward to welcoming Stoke City during their preparation for the 2012-13 Premier League season," Sporting Club CEO Robb Heineman said. "Kansas City continues to be a destination for international soccer matches and this will be another opportunity for us to showcase Sporting Kansas City and LIVESTRONG Sporting Park this summer."

Founded in 1863, Stoke City are the oldest club in the Premier League and are led by Manager Tony Pulis and forward Peter Crouch, an England international with 22 goals in 42 appearances.

Since gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2008, Stoke have enjoyed considerable success in England's top division, advancing all the way to the 2011 FA Cup final against Manchester City. The club also gained entrance to the 2011-12 Europa League, where they progressed to the knockout stages of the tournament before falling in a two-legged series to Spanish powerhouse Valencia CF.

In preparation for the friendly, which has been brokered by Santio Sports and Entertainment, the EPL club is expected to hold training sessions at the Sporting Club Training Center in Swope Park as part of their pre-season. VIP packages, including the opportunity to attend a Newcastle United training session and a coaching clinic with the team's technical staff will be made available at a later date.

The match will be the fifth international event held at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park since its opening in June of 2011. The state-of-the-art, $200+ million venue hosted the U.S. Men's National Team during the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup last June, as well as semifinals and finals of the 2012 CONCACAF Men's Olympic Qualifying Tournament this March.

(March 9, 2012) – Sporting Kansas City kicks off the team’s 2012 Major League Soccer season at 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday on the road at D.C. United. The match will be shown live on KSMO-TV with a 30-minute pre-game show starting at 6:00 p.m. CT and will be available over the airwaves on La Gran D 1340 AM (Espanol).

After securing the club’s first place finish in the Eastern Conference with a 1-0 win at RFK Stadium in last year’s regular season finale, Sporting KC returns to Washington, D.C. with all 11 starters from the Eastern Conference Championship match in the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs.

New club captain and 2011 team MVP Jimmy Nielsen will anchor the Sporting Kansas City defense in goal, while the backline is led by 2011 MLS All-Star Matt Besler. On the opposite end of the field, Sporting’s wealth of attacking options include two of the team’s leading goal scorers from a year ago, Teal Bunbury and Kei Kamara, as well as 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year C.J. Sapong and the newly acquired veteran Bobby Convey.

Kansas City legend added to T-Bones coaching staff

KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas City T-Bones are excited to announce that Kansas City legend and five-time all-star Frank White has been added to the coaching staff for the 2012 season.

White enjoyed an 18-year playing career with the Kansas City Royals from 1973-90. He appeared in five all-star games in that span and was an eight-time Gold Glove award winner, including six straight from 1977-82. White was selected as ALCS MVP in 1980 and was an integral part of the Royals’ 1985 World Series Championship team. He was elected to the Royals Hall of Fame in 1995 and his National Baseball Hall of Fame status is eligible for review next year.

"I am excited to get involved with the T-Bones organization, and to work with the young kids on their roster," White said. "Teaching is a passion of mine and I look forward to helping these players become the best that they can be."

White will join manager Tim Doherty’s staff and will serve in a variety of roles from the bench, and as first base coach. He will also work alongside T-Bones Vice President & General Manager, Chris Browne, who first met White during his years as the Royals bat boy and clubhouse attendant.

"I am thrilled to announce that Frank will be joining the T-Bones," Browne said. "He will be an asset to Tim, our coaching staff and a great addition to the clubhouse overall. I look forward to seeing #20 in uniform at CommunityAmerica Ballpark and I know our fans will too."

White will continue a coaching career that began in 1992 when he was named manager of the Boston Red Sox’s Gulf Coast League affiliate. He later became first base coach for the Royals from 1997-2001, and eventually moved on to his most recent coaching stint with the Royals former Double-A affiliate, the Wichita Wranglers, where he served as manager from 2004-06.

"I want to thank Chris for thinking of me and making this possible," White added. "We have a long history together and I think this is a great way for me to give back to the game of baseball. I would also like to thank the T-Bones’ owners, John and Adam Ehlert, and I look forward to working with Tim to help him reach the team’s goals."

(November 8, 2011) – Major League Soccer announced today that Sporting Kansas City forward C.J. Sapong has been named the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year.

Sapong finished the MLS regular season with five goals and five assists while also becoming the only player on Sporting Kansas City's roster to feature in all 34 of the club's regular season matches.

"Receiving this honor is very humbling, but it would never have been a possibility without the help of so many people. Our goal at Sporting KansasCity is to do everything as a team, and I am so thankful for my teammates and the coaching staff," Sapong said. "My parents have been a huge influence in my life and have kept me level-headed, and all of my friends and family back in Virginia and at James Madison, plus all the great Sporting Kansas City fans in make winning the 2011 MLS Rookie of the Year even more special."

In total, Sporting Kansas City held an unblemished record of 5-0-0 in regular season matches when Sapong scored a goal.

"The organization is extremely proud of C.J. We believed in him right from the start, but we didn't expect him to come along and exceeded expectations the way he did," Sporting Kansas City manager Peter Vermes said. "We're excited because C.J. has such a bright future for Sporting Kansas City."

Of Sapong's five assists on the year, two led to game-winning goals for Sporting Kansas City. Only midfielder Graham Zusi tallied more assists for Sporting Kansas City in the 2011 season. KFB's Young Farmers & Ranchers to Engage NASCAR Fans this Weekend in Wyandotte County

MANHATTAN, Kan. – The Young Farmers & Ranchers of Kansas Farm Bureau will take advantage of a captive audience of NASCAR fans from throughout the Midwest this weekend to share the good word about family farming, ranching and rural living.

KFB's Young Farmers & Ranchers will host the Farm American/Furniture Row #78 NASCAR Sprint Cup team at the National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame in Bonner Springs, Kan.

"What a great opportunity to share our way of life," said Jeff Bathurst, A Dickinson County farmer who serves as this year's Chair of KFB's Young Farmers & Ranchers Committee. "We hope race fans will take some time during their weekend race experience to make their way to the National Agriculture Center & Hall of Fame, just one mile west of the Kansas Speedway."

Young South Dakota agriculture advocates Troy and Stacy Hadrick will also be present to lend a hand.

The race car will be on display at the National Agricultural Center & Hall of Fame Friday through Sunday, October 7-9. The driver of the #78, Regan Smith, has five top 10 finishes this season in NASCAR's Sprint Cup Series.

"I grew up in farm country in Cato, N.Y. (near Syracuse) and my parents were both raised on a farm," said #78 Farm American Driver, Regan Smith. Furniture Row cares deeply about the agriculture industry and I am proud to wear the Farm American colors this weekend at Kansas Speedway."

The Kansas Speedway will host NASCAR's Nationwide Series Kansas Lottery 300 on Saturday, October 8 and the Hollywood Casino 400 on Sunday, October 9. Sunday's race is among NASCAR's Chase for the Sprint Cup.

From the U.S. Soccer Communications Center:

ALL 21 PLAYERS FROM 2011 FIFA WOMEN'S WORLD CUP TEAM NAMED TO U.S. ROSTER TO FACE CANADA IN "WNT CELEBRATION SERIES"

U.S. Women Play Canada on Sept. 17 in Kansas City, Kan., at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park and on Sept. 22 in Portland Ore., at JELD-WEN Field

CHICAGO (Aug. 29, 2011) – The entire 21-player roster for the United States from this summer's 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup will face Canada during the "WNT Celebration Series" on Sept. 17 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., and on Sept. 22 at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Ore.

These will be the first matches for the U.S. Women since the historic tournament in which the Americans fell to Japan in the World Cup Final after a dramatic penalty kick shoot-out.

Both games will be broadcast live with the USA's first visit to the recently opened LIVESTRONG Sporting Park kicking off at 6 p.m. CT on FOX Soccer. While the U.S. team has played nine matches in Portland and six at previous incarnations of the venue (going 5-1-0), this will be the first match for the U.S. Women at the newly renovated JELD-WEN Field. The match will kick off at 8 p.m. PT live on ESPN2.

Tickets starting at $22 are currently on sale to the public for both games through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the Kansas City and Portland areas, as well as at the stadium ticket offices. Approximately 1,000 general admission and 200-level corner tickets remain for the match in Portland before obstructed-view seats become available.

Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290. Ultimate Fan Tickets (special VIP packages that include a premium ticket, a custom made official U.S. National Team jersey with name and number, VIP access to the field before and after the game, and other unique benefits) are also available exclusively through ussoccer.com.

All the stars from the exciting run in Germany will be representing the United States in these two matches, including forward Abby Wambach and goalkeeper Hope Solo, who were recognized for their exceptional performances with the Silver and Bronze Ball awards, respectively, as the second and third-best players in the tournament. Solo also grabbed the Golden Glove as the top goalkeeper during a tournament in which she passed 100 career caps. Wambach won the Bronze Boot as the tournament's third leading scorer. Her four goals upped her career World Cup tally to 13 breaking the U.S. record previously held by Michelle Akers (12). Wambach now has 122 career goals, just eight shy of tying Kristine Lilly for second on the USA's all-time goal scoring list.

Solo will be honored for earning her 100th cap before the USA's match in Portland. She becomes just the second U.S. goalkeeper to reach that mark after Briana Scurry, who played in 173 career games.

The U.S. and Canada will be meeting for the 49th and 50th times in history, the most for the USA against any country, with the U.S. holding a 41-3-4 series edge. The teams most recently met in the second match of this year during the Four Nations Tournament in China, a 2-1 U.S. victory on goals by Lauren and Lindsay Tarpley. Canada features one of the world's top strikers in Christine Sinclair, who along with U.S. super-sub Alex Morgan helped lead the Western New York Flash to the 2011 Women's Professional Soccer championship this past weekend.

The appearance at the brand new, state-of-the art LIVESTRONG Sporting Park will be the first in Kansas for the U.S., although the team has played in Arrowhead Stadium on the Missouri side of the state line four times, compiling a 2-0-2 record. Two of those meetings came in post-Women's World Cup tours in 1999 and 2003, and the most recent was a 1-0 win against Mexico in the Fan Celebration Tour following the 2004 Olympics.

The U.S. Women have a record of 12-3-2 in 2011 and are riding a 49-game unbeaten streak at home, compiling a record of 44-0-5 during that time. Carli Lloyd leads the team with six goals in 2011, while Wambach, Alex Morgan and Lauren Cheney have scored five each.

Below are highlights of some of the must-see public art displays in Kansas and Missouri and we invite you to continue exploring on MailScanner has detected a possible fraud attempt from "kccva.informz.net" claiming to be www.kcdestinations.com.

Throughout downtown Kansas City, KS one can find a plethora of murals that celebrate the rich and ethnic background of Wyandotte County. The Dawning of a New Day mural honors the importance of family and culture in the African American community, and the El Baile de la Vida mural pays tribute to Mexican folklórico dancing. (Click here for more information).

Just outside Merriam's visitor center in the town's historical plaza, one will find a sculpture entitled The Bear Pit by sculptor Kwan Wu. The sculpture commemorates the "three wandering bears" who lived in the Merriam Zoo during the late 1800s. They used to regularly escape their "bear pit" and stroll through the town! (Click here for more information).

For six weeks beginning August 2nd, the photography of Chris Kilmer will be featured at the Gladstone Community Center in Clay County. Kilmer's photographs trace as far back as the 1970s and feature various landscape and architectural images. (Click here for more information).

After the destruction of the Berlin Wall in 1989, concrete sections of the historic barrier were donated to Fort Leavenworth because of the worldwide influence of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. The Berlin Wall Monument was created with those sections to memorialize the significance of the Cold War. (Click here for more information).

One of the most recognizable features of Kansas City's skyline, "Sky Stations," towers more than 200 feet above the Kansas City Convention Center. The R.M. Fisher stainless steel sculpture references the 1930s art deco style once prevalent in downtown buildings. It is one of several public art pieces commissioned under the city's "One Percent for Art" program. (Click here for more information).

The Lenexa City Hall art gallery rotates works of art on a monthly basis. From Aug 1-Aug 25 the City Hall Gallery Show will be Night Sky Photography by Doug Zubenel. September and October will feature the works of local Kansas City artists. (Click here for more information).

The statue is just one of 34 stops on the Truman walking trail. (Click here for more information).

The City of Overland Park has a long-range public art master plan which includes numerous arts projects currently installed throughout the City. One of the projects is located at 119th and Metcalf Avenue. Named the Shim, Sham, Shimmy, the commissioned sculpture references the area's importance in jazz development. (Click here for more information).

The Bonner Beautiful Commission recently donated a statue to the Bonner Springs City Library. The bronze statue sits outside of the library and depicts two children sitting on a bench reading books. (Click here for more information).

The Hands of Freedom monument in Shawnee was designed by architect, Maurice D. McMullen, for the Veterans' Tribute Park. The symbolic monument represents the hands of our many veterans striving to hold the world aloft in Freedom. (Click here for more information).

A replica mosaic of DaVinci's The Last Supper can be found at the Ashland United Methodist Church in St. Joseph. The 6'9" public art piece took over 5000 hours to complete by community members and artist Al Kost. The mosaic is composed of 120,000 pieces of Venetian glass tile from all over the United States! The two-game series featuring the U.S. Women's World Cup squad will begin at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. CT live on FOX Soccer and continues on Thursday, Sept. 22, at JELD-WEN Field.

Tickets starting at $22 go on sale to the public for both games Friday, Aug. 12, at 10 a.m. local time through ussoccer.com, by phone at 1-800-745-3000 and at all Ticketmaster ticket centers throughout the Kansas City and Portland areas, as well as at the stadium ticket offices. Groups of 20 or more can obtain an order form at ussoccer.com or call 312-528-1290. Ultimate Fan Tickets (special VIP packages which include a premium ticket, a custom made official U.S. National Team jersey with name and number, VIP access to the field before and after the game, and other unique benefits) are also available exclusively through ussoccer.com.

Sporting Kansas City season ticket members will have access to an exclusive pre-sale beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT on Thursday, August 4th by calling 888-4KC-GOAL.

As a sponsor of U.S. Soccer, Visa® is pleased to offer all Visa cardholders access to an advance ticket sale for this match before the sale to the general public. This advance sale starts Thursday, Aug. 11, at 10 a.m. local time and runs until Friday, Aug. 12, at 8 a.m. local time at ussoccer.com. Visa will be the only payment method accepted through the Visa presale and is the preferred card of U.S. Soccer. Terms and conditions apply.

The U.S. team will come together for the first time since its dramatic run at the FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany where it captivated the country with an inspirational march to the final, coming tantalizingly close to winning the world championship before Japan scored a late overtime equalizer and then won the tournament in a penalty shootout.

Abby Wambach and Hope Solo led the U.S. effort at the Women's World Cup and were recognized for their exceptional performances with the Silver and Bronze Ball awards, respectively, as the second and third best players in the tournament. Solo also grabbed the Golden Glove as the top goalkeeper during a tournament in which she passed 100 career caps, and Wambach won the Bronze Boot as the tournament's third leading scorer. Her four goals upped her career World Cup tally to 13 to break the U.S. record previously held by Michelle Akers (12). Wambach now has 122 career goals, just eight shy of tying Kristine Lilly for second on the USA's all-time goal scoring list.

Canada is coming off a first-round exit at the Women's World Cup. Although the Maple Leafs opened with a more than respectable 2-1 loss to host Germany in the tournament's opening game in front of almost 75,000 fans in Berlin, losses to France and Nigeria prevented advancement to the knockout round.

The teams will be meeting for the 49th and 50th times in history, the most for the USA against any country, with the U.S. holding a 41-3-4 series edge. The teams most recently met in the second match of this year during the Four Nations Tournament in China, a 2-1 U.S. victory on goals by Lauren Cheney and Lindsay Tarpley. Canada features one of the world's top strikers in Christine Sinclair, who currently leads Women's Professional Soccer in goal scoring, having knocked in nine scores for the Western New York Flash this season.

The appearance at the brand new, state-of-the art LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas will be the first in that state for the U.S., although the team has played in Arrowhead Stadium on the Missouri side of the state line four times compiling a 2-0-2 record.

Lloyd leads the team with six goals in 2011, while Wambach, Cheney and Alex Morgan have scored five each.

Sporting Kansas City Designated Player Omar Bravo
Chosen as 2011 All-Star by MLS Commissioner

Striker leads Sporting Kansas City with 10 points this season on four goals and two assists

(July 16, 2011) – Sporting Kansas City striker Omar Bravo was selected to the 2011 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on Saturday as one of two picks made by Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber.

"Omar Bravo is a player with big-game experience, and that was a key factor in my decision to name him as one of my commissioner's picks," Garber said. "His quickness and unpredictable nature will create scoring chances, and that will be critical to our success against Manchester United."

Bravo, 31, leads Sporting Kansas City with four goals this season and has added two assists, including one game-winner in each category. The club's second-ever Designated Player, he earned MLS Player of the Week honors after scoring twice in his debut at Chivas USA and was named FutbolMLS.com's "Latino de la Jornada" this week after scoring the game-tying goal in the 93rd minute of the team's 1-1 draw last Saturday.

"It is an honor to be one of Commissioner Garber's picks for the 2011 AT&T All-Star Game," Bravo said. "I missed the trip to New York earlier this season; it is one of my favorite places to visit. It will be also be great to see friends like Chicharito (Javier Hernandez), Rafa (Marquez) and the other All-Stars. I will represent my team well and I know the game will be very competitive."

The former Mexico National Team icon earns the All-Star recognition in his first season in Major League Soccer after arriving from Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara, where he ranks second on the club's all-time goal scoring chart.

"Omar Bravo is deserving of this selection," Sporting Kansas City Manager Peter Vermes said. "Not only has he been an impactful player for Sporting Kansas City, but he has also been important for Major League Soccer."

Bravo joins Sporting Kansas City defender Matt Besler, an overwhelming winner in the AT&T Text Voting, among the 14 MLS All-Star selections announced to date. All-Star coach Hans Backe and his staff will select the entire game day roster, which will be unveiled on MLSsoccer.com on Monday, July 18th.

The 2011 MLS All-Stars will go up against English Premier League champions Manchester United at 7:30 p.m. CT on July 27th at Red Bull Arena, and will be shown live on ESPN2, Galavision and TSN2.

New York Red Bulls striker Juan Agudelo was the second selection made by Garber on Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Kan.—Today Farm Aid announced an array of artists who will join the musical lineup for its 2011 concert, scheduled for August 13 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan.

Jason Mraz, Jamey Johnson, Jakob Dylan, Lukas Nelson & Promise of the Real, Will Dailey & the Rivals, Robert Francis, Pegi Young & the Survivors, Rebecca Pidgeon, Billy Joe Shaver and John Trudell will all join Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews at Farm Aid 2011.

"Farm Aid is a movement inspired not only by the passion of Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young and Dave Matthews, but also by the more than 400 artists who have donated their performances at our shows over the years," said Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid. "This year, we are thrilled to welcome back several familiar faces to the Farm Aid stage as well as some first-timers for what is sure to be a remarkable day of music, food and inspiration."

The all-day festival will be a celebration of music, family farmers and good food and will again feature HOMEGROWN concessions — family farm-identified, local and organic foods. Farm Aid's HOMEGROWN Village will showcase hands-on activities that give concertgoers a chance to meet farmers, get their hands dirty and learn how family farmers are protecting our land and water, as well as connecting us to our roots.

Tickets for Farm Aid 2011 are available by phone at 1-800-745-3000, in person at the LIVESTRONG Sporting Park box office, or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets for Farm Aid 2011 are $29 for general admission; $39, $69 and $99 for reserved seats; and $149 for a limited number of premium seats. Additional ticket information can be found at www.LIVESTRONGsportingpark.com and www.farmaid.org.

Since 1985, Farm Aid has traveled the country to support organizations that work locally, regionally and nationally to strengthen family farms. Despite the recent increase in commodity prices, family farmers still face an uphill struggle. In recent years, Farm Aid has received record numbers of phone calls to its hotline and online Farmer Resource Network from farmers in need due to volatile farm prices, tight credit markets, escalating costs and weather-related disasters, such as the recent floods, droughts and tornadoes across the country. Farm Aid also works to inform consumers about the value of good food from family farms and helps make connections between eaters and family farmers to increase the demand for family farm food. Farm Aid's annual benefit concert is its primary event to raise funds in support of the organization's work.

To learn more about the Farm Aid 2011 lineup, visit www.farmaid.org/lineup.

Sponsors of Farm Aid 2011 include Horizon Organic, Organic Valley, Silk Soymilk, United Natural Foods, Inc. (UNFI), Whole Foods Market, Goodness Greeness and Hippie Chow. Farm Aid welcomes sponsor and hospitality inquiries to Glenda@farmaid.org.

All concertgoers are asked to support the Farm Aid food drive by bringing non-perishable food or fresh produce to the concert. The food will be donated to Harvesters—The Community Food Network, which serves 26-counties in Northeastern Kansas and Northwestern Missouri and helps feed 66,000 people every week. Volunteers from Harvesters will be at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park during the concert collecting food. Suggested donation items include fresh produce, canned fruits and vegetables, cereal, hearty cold weather meals like stew and soup, and peanut butter. Learn more at www.harvesters.org.

Farm Aid's mission is to build a vibrant, family farm-centered system of agriculture in America. Farm Aid artists and board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews host an annual concert to raise funds to support Farm Aid's work with family farmers and to inspire people to choose family farm food. Since 1985, Farm Aid, with the support of the artists who contribute their performances each year, has raised more than $39 million to support programs that help farmers thrive, expand the reach of the Good Food Movement, take action to change the dominant system of industrial agriculture and promote food from family farms.

(June 9, 2011) – After sixteen months of waiting for construction to be completed, Sporting Kansas City will open LIVESTRONG Sporting Park tonight at 9:00 p.m CT against the Chicago Fire.

This is the second meeting of the 2011 season between the two rivals. On March 26, Sporting Kansas City travelled to Toyota Park for Chicago's first home match of 2011. Designated Player Omar Bravo was sent off in the 32nd minute as Chicago topped Sporting Kansas City by a 3-2 scoreline.

Tonight's match is also the second stadium opening that Chicago has participated in so far in 2011, after suffering a 4-2 defeat the hands of the Timbers in Portland's first match at Jeld-Wen Field.

Sporting Kansas City will be without midfielders Craig Rocastle and Stephane Auvray, as well as defenders Shavar Thomas and Roger Espinoza. Chicago Technical Director Frank Klopas will manage his second ever match from the Fire bench on Thursday. Klopas was named interim head coach for the Fire following the dismissal of Carlos de los Cobos from the managerial position on May 30, two days after the team's 2-2 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes.

The grand opening of LIVESTRONG Sporting Park will feature a full-array of festivities prior to the opening kick-off in front of a national-TV audience on ESPN2's MLS Primetime match of the week. LIVESTRONG® to Invest $1.75 Million to Improve the Lives of People Affected by Cancer in Kansas City

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Katherine McLane (512) 279-8384

LIVESTRONG® to Invest $1.75 Million toImprove the Lives of People Affected by Cancer in Kansas City

Sporting Kansas City Star Omar Bravo Joins LIVESTRONG as Global Envoy; LIVESTRONG Names Three Kansas City Organizations as Recipients of Proven Cancer Support Programs

Kansas City, Kansas – June 7, 2011 – Today, LIVESTRONG® announced a $1.75 million investment to improve the lives of people affected by cancer in Kansas City. LIVESTRONG has also enlisted Sporting Kansas City star Omar Bravo as a LIVESTRONG Global Envoy to help the foundation spread its message of awareness and survivorship to the Hispanic/Latino community in the U.S. and Mexico. The announcement was made at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, the first athletic venue in the world to champion the cancer cause that opens to great fanfare on Thursday, June 9.

"LIVESTRONG has high hopes for this stadium and the power it can wield in breaking down the stigma that surrounds cancer," said Doug Ulman, LIVESTRONG president and CEO. "Every ticket purchased will help to connect cancer survivors here in Kansas City and around the world to proven cancer support programs that will improve their quality of life – a priceless contribution that will continue long after the game is over."

Through its partnership with Sporting Club, LIVESTRONG is planning a comprehensive approach to deepen its engagement with Kansas City by providing inspiration and empowerment to area residents and investing inbold and innovative cancer support programs in the region. Over the course of its five-year agreement, LIVESTRONG will collaborate with organizations, institutions, schools and healthcare professionals to:

• increase access to programs aimed at improving the quality of life for those affected by cancer
• deploy navigation resources to ensure the best possible experience for all people with cancerwith an emphasis on underserved populations
• educate and empower school professionals to help students impacted by cancer
• actively engage The University of Kansas Cancer Center and the Midwest Cancer Alliance to establish survivorship programs throughout the region
• evaluate the needs and experiences of local cancer survivors through the LIVESTRONG Survey to identify future investment opportunities and drive policy
• create a LIVESTRONG Kansas City Endowment in the amount of $100,000 a year to generate additional revenue that would be used for future investments in Kansas City cancer support programs

Several Kansas City organizations will benefit immediately from LIVESTRONG's investment including Cancer Action (Overland Park, Kansas), The University of Kansas Cancer Center – Midwest Cancer Alliance (Kansas City, Kansas) and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City.

This week, LIVESTRONG is announcing the finalists of its national Community Impact Project who receive a financial award to help replicate and implement proven cancer support programs in their communities. Two organizations in the Kansas City region – Cancer Action and The University of Kansas Cancer Center, Midwest Cancer Alliance – have been selected to receive Cancer Transitions, a program designed to support, educate and empower people with cancer in the transitional period after treatment is over. The program incorporates support groups, education, nutrition and physical exercise, as well as addressing other medical management, psychosocial and quality of life issues. The program also provides survivors with practical tools and resources to formulate a personal action plan for survivorship beyond their participation in Cancer Transitions.

As part of its investment in Kansas City, the YMCA of Greater Kansas City is receiving funding to offer LIVESTRONG at the YMCA, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. Participants work with Y staff trained in supportive cancer care to safely achieve their goals such as building muscle mass and strength; increasing flexibility and endurance; and improving confidence and self-esteem. By focusing on the whole person and not the disease, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA helps people move beyond cancer in spirit, mind and body.

In recent years, LIVESTRONG has been expanding its outreach to the Hispanic/Latino community where cancer is the second leading cause of death and cancer rates are projected to increase 142 percent by 2030. The stigma of cancer is especially serious among Hispanic males, so the addition of Bravo, a native of Mexico, comes at a critical juncture as LIVESTRONG is currently launching a campaign in Mexico to break the stigma and silence that surrounds the disease.

Bravo joined Sporting Kansas City for the 2011 season and is one of the most decorated and beloved players in Chivas Guadalajara history. Bravo is a proven goal-scorer who has netted more than 150 goals in more than 450top-flight matches for club and country. He is a veteran athlete who has played in both the 2006 FIFA World Cup and the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece.

WILLIE NELSON, FARM AID BRINGING MUSIC AND FOOD FESTIVAL TO LIVESTRONG Sporting Park

Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews will headline first concert at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park on Aug. 13 KANSAS CITY, Kan. --

Farm Aid announced today that it will bring its annual benefit concert to Kansas City, marking the first time that the organization will stage the event in Kansas. Farm Aid 2011 will be the first concert event at the new LIVESTRONG Sporting Park, which opens June 9. “I’m looking forward to bringing my friends together in Kansas for the first time to honor family farmers,” said Farm Aid President Willie Nelson.

“Farm Aid celebrates the independent family farmers and ranchers who make this country strong, and we know we can only fix the challenges our country faces with the know-how of family farmers.” Farm Aid 2011 will feature Farm Aid board members Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews on Saturday, Aug. 13. Other top artists will soon be announced. Sporting Kansas City’s home match against the Los Angeles Galaxy, originally scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, will be moved to accommodate the inaugural concert event. The date and the time of the match will be announced as soon as details are finalized.

The concert benefits Farm Aid’s mission to keep family farmers on the land to guarantee an agricultural system that ensures farmers a fair living, strengthens our communities, protects our natural resources and delivers good food for all.

Farm Aid 2011 will celebrate music, family farmers and good food, and will again feature HOMEGROWN concessions -- family-farm identified, local and organic foods. Farm Aid’s HOMEGROWN Village will showcase hands-on activities that give concertgoers a chance to meet farmers, get their hands dirty and learn how family farmers enrich our soil, protect our water and connect us to our roots. “Willie, John, Neil and Dave stand up to say that our country needs family farmers,” said Carolyn Mugar, executive director of Farm Aid.

“Farm Aid 2011 is an opportunity for everyone to stand up with them. There is a strong culture of agriculture here in Kansas -- rural and urban -- and a growing movement to bring good food to everyone. We’re proud to bring Farm Aid 2011 to the Sunflower State and shine a spotlight on the family farmers andranchers whose hard work and innovations are essential for all of us.”

“Farm Aid is a great inaugural concert announcement, as it builds upon a cause platform we started with LIVESTRONG Sporting Park,” said Robb Heineman, CEO of Sporting Club. “This unique opportunity for the region is just the first of many great events we will host, and we are excited for Farm Aid to kick it off.” Kansas Governor Sam Brownback and Kansas City Mayor Joe Reardon welcomed Farm Aid to Kansas and highlighted the value of family farmers and good food to the state.

Video from Wednesday's event will be available on SportingKC.com. Since 1985, Farm Aid has traveled the country, staging annual concerts and supporting organizations that work locally, regionally and nationally to strengthen family farms. Despite the recent increase in commodity prices, family farmers still face an uphill struggle. In recent years, Farm Aid has received record numbers of phone calls to its hotline from farmers in need due to volatile farm prices, tight credit markets, escalating costs and disasters, such as the recent floods, droughts and tornadoes across the Midwest and South. Farm Aid’s annual benefit concert is its primary event to raise funds in support of the organization’s work.

Tickets for Farm Aid 2011 will go on sale Friday, May 20, at 10 a.m. CDT and are available by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. Tickets for Farm Aid 2011 are $29 for general admission; $39, $69 and $99 for reserved seats; and $149 for a limited number of premium seats. Ticket prices include a $4 facility fee. Parking is free. Additional ticket information can be found at www.LIVESTRONGSportingPark.com and www.farmaid.org.

Farm Aid will offer special advance sale tickets to Farm Aid members beginning May 12. To become a member of Farm Aid, visit www.farmaid.org. Sporting Kansas City season ticket members will also have access to an exclusive pre-sale for tickets to Farm
